|
|
i actually got ventrilo to work
im using the latest version of ventrilo and wine
its playing sidebyside using the same soundcard as World of Warcraft on cedega
it works. i can hear people fine with no issues
i can send also as long as i select the vent window first and press the push to talk button
it sends but according to people im playing with its barely audible
they are using the gsm codec at like 22 or 44Khz
both 22 and 44Khz sounds funny even with the local test, its got lots of breakage in the audio.. sounds sorta like a robot
at 8Khz it plays fine, but is lower quality
the msgsm32 codec file seems to only encode decent audio at 8Khz when emulated by wine..
ive tried 3 different versions of this codec file (the windows XP one works the best)
anyone have any tips on how i can get this to be clearer? |

well apparently the new version of wine has shit for audio options..
no documentation on the options
barely anything for options in the winecfg..
its not wonder cedega is so popular, you need it just for wine to be useful for anything more than the most basic windows guis |

Speaking as someone who used Ventrilo with Wine for over a year without too much difficulty (other than the irritation of making sure Vent had focus before I tried to speak), I can safely say that you most likely haven't set up either your Vent options or your ALSA mixers properly. All you have to do for Wine is make sure the audio drivers are set to OSS, so I'd doubt that the problem lies there. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

If it's barely audible, you can turn up the outbound sound amplifiers in vent settings. If you hear breakage in higher frequency quality, there's a few possible problems. 1 is your mic is crud quality and can't pick up higher freqs well, although this is pretty unlikely. 2 is your computer can't handle the higher quality sound coming out, which has many possible sources, including bad sound card, bad drivers, bad mixers, or weak computer power (ie. not enough RAM, speed), app priority, or a combination of everything above. Post some specs so we can help you. |

I play olde tyme CS (1.6) under steam in wine just fine (100fps solid.)
It can play CS:Source, too, but it runs like crap.
It's not exactly useless, and it is free _________________ Play ET? Come by #gentoo.et on freenode!

Is there a wiki entry or a how to for this? I'm looking to get vent and WoW to work on my system, so current information on getting both to work would be real nice _________________ Adopt an unanswered post |

i still have this exact problem
it has nothing to do with the codec, but lower quality codecs sound better (but server chooses, and i cant use a lower quality codec on other peoples servers)
it seems to run my samples too fast, so it has lots of gaps, also it sounds like im talking super fast...
anyway when i set wine to use ALSA i sound fine, but on cedega i can only talk until someone else talks, then it bugs out
ALSA on wine i can talk and others can talk without issue for about 5 minutes, then it throws some error and i gotta reset it (going to settings usually fixes it, or reopening vent)
wine with oss works except for that input quality issue
my computer is hella fast, my soundcard is a soundblaster live (so shouldnt be any problem there)
the only thing i can guess is that the way wine gets oss input .. sucks
OSS input on other apps sounds fine
input on wine using alsa sounds fine (but has other issues) |
