Yeah. I had to take a Summer class this time. Oh well.
Edit: I've sent you a couple of messages via IRC at Phenax @ irc.freenode.com |

Any more ideas? I doubt I can do any realtime chat before the end of the summer semester in two weeks, so posts will probably have to do. |

Having tried both, I've found that nVidia cards are FAR easier to configure than ATI cards.

Hey! Check this out:
Gentoo-Wiki.com wrote: | Black/Blank screen when starting X
Symptoms: A black/blank screen when X starts, followed by the monitor going in standby mode after a moment. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't kill X and get you back to the console. Problem: This issue is caused by bad refresh rate values given to X in your xorg.conf config file.
In order to fix this, you will need to find the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh values for your monitor. Here's a list of values that did NOT work for me:
* Values that do work with vesa driver
* Values given in the technical specs of my monitor
* Values from the xorg.conf automatically generated by the nvidia installer (when using driver from nvidia.com, not by emerging)
In fact what saved my life was to install ubuntu on my second hard drive, and to use the values for HorizSync and VertRefresh that were generated by the Ubuntu installer in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf config file. Instead of installing a whole Ubuntu system like I did, I suggest you boot on a LiveCD, it might just work as well. If you are very unlucky and you still haven't found the good refresh rate for your monitor + the nvidia drivers, i suggest you try mine, in case it works:
Code: Example Monitor Configuration
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 28-64
VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection
If it still does not work, then I wish you good luck at trying to guess the good refresh rate for your monitor. |
I'm going to boot into Knoppix and see what refresh rates it generates.
Thanks for the link!
I'll report on my success or lack thereof in a moment. |

Well, I haven't found a working refresh rate yet, but I still have a few to try.
I tried to find a working xorg.conf online from another Toshiba Satellite Pro M15-S405, but I haven't had any luck with that yet. |

Hmm. I tried the "HorizSync 28-64/VertRefresh 43-60" setup listed in that guide, and it didn't fix my nvidia drivers, but I decided to give up and changed back to the nv driver. When I restarted, it gave me 1024x768 mode on the nv driver.
I'd still like hardware 3D acceleration (I'm starting to experience some Nexuiz withdrawl. ) but it can wait until this summer semester is done.
If I find a solution for hardware acceleration before then, I'll post and add (solved) to the title. If not, I may revive the thread after the semester is over, if that's alright. Of course, if anybody has any ideas where I might get a working xorg.conf, please let me know. I'll try to check this thread regularly.
Thank you guys very much for your help so far. I'll see you guys again soon. |

I have been struggling with the same driver problem for a couple of days. Doing Code: | env-update && source /etc/profile && emerge nvidia-drivers |
again and again and again until in compiled fine did the trick last time. But not this time. Doing as dansehl recommended, that is using the nvidia installer from nvidia.com, worked just fine. Thanks |

Today I did an emerge --sync, tried to emerge nvidia-drivers but was told they were ~x86. So, I added them to my /etc/portage/package.keywords, emerged them, after unmerging nvidia-kernel and nvidial-glx.
I then reset my xorg.conf back to the sync parameters before I upgraded the kernel and voila, it works. Only problem was KDE desktop fonts were way too large. I made everything smaller by about 2-3 points and it's working.
Is it possible this is solved?
Afterthought:
It seems to me irresponsible on the part of those managing this show to release as stable a kernel that won't work with stable mainstream video drivers without as much as a warning. This shouldn't be so difficult. _________________ Andy Figueroa

Oh, you had the unknown symbol errors?
(I listed several different errors. Just wondering which one you solved using that method.) |
