For some reason on my linux box I cannot connect to steam. I have had tehm reset my password and what not and they have verified that it is still up and running, but I cannot connect. I can do it from my friends machine in the next room but when I try to connect with the right password I get this error
Code:

Stean -- Error

Could not connect to the Steam network.
This could be due to a problem with your internet connection, or with the Steam network. Please visit www.steampowered.com for more info

I have been in contact with the Steam support people for quite some time and they dont know. My friends windows box connects to my account just fine, linux does not. I have reinstalled with no luck. Any ideas?

btw - If i type in the wrong password intentionally it will say my password is wrong so I know its at least checking my password. PLEASE any suggestions?

What version of wine are you using? Is your tree up to date?

i've seen this before, my only way to fix it was to exit steam, make sure wine+wineserver were not running, waiting 10 mintues or so and trying again. sometimes this happens when steam still thinks the other client is connected.

That's strange...I've never had a problem in Steam for some time now. I had a problem after one Steam update, but I reinstalled it with the latest executable and it worked fine after that.

My problem has never been connecting to steam but rather getting source games to work.
