Hy,
I start hating Amarok: Starting with the new versions there are so many problems (crashing, only half of the playlists loaded, Libary gets mixed up [wrong artist to wrong track]) that I don't want to use AmaroK anymore. So I'm searching an alternative. I heard of banshee but its gnome and I use only kde and I dont want to compile all the gnome-libaries. Are there other alternatives? I realy need a kind of music-libary, thats why I can't use xmms, otherwise this would be fine.
Who knows something?

juk has always been more stable than amarok, and it's KDE.

Hy,
thanks for the tipp, doesn't look bad, but how can I tell JuK to add files to my playlist (at the end) when double-clicking instead of playing it at once? And: Where can I configure the last.fm-username? According to the website this feature should be implemented! Is there realy no "Config-Dialog"?

Right click on the file and then click "Add to play queue." I have no idea about last.fm though.

thanks you all, buuut:
1. audacious hasn't got a music-library or have i missed it?
2. bmpx is great (will use it) but why can't I switch on the Desktop-Notfications (the checkbox is disabled/grayed out)?

Try mpd and QMPDClient 1.0.5. Ebuild has yet to make it into portage but one's in bugzilla, Link. You can set up its double-click behaviour and much more. I'd use mpd-svn (emerge mpd-svn) with it. Features include gapless playback, replaygain support etc.

I have been using pympd, which i similiar to qmpdclient. But I think I like qmpdclient better, it is a bit bigger in most regards, but flows really nice. Thanks for the find

I second MPD. A cool feature of MPD is that you can connect to it from any computer since it's a Daemon. For a simple, no-nonsense client, check out ncmpc which is a curses frontend to MPD. I usually SSH into the box that has MPD running and start up ncmpc in the shell.

Hy,
I tried mpd with qmpdclient but I lacks one thing: Hotkeys so I can use my Multimediakeyboard, but perhaps this will be implemented in futher versions. Also mpd seems to have problem with some mp3-tags and doesn't read them at all (title blank which makes search difficult)

Nothing will ever be better than amarok in my opinion. It's completely stable for me, no bugs, no errors, no crashing, and I'm using amd64, which tends to be less stable than x86.
Were you using the latest 1.4 release? |

Agreed, though I'm still on the 1.3 series. For me it looks like mpd will improve with development, but it lacks some features I like (like a database that keeps track of genres; correct me if I'm wrong.)
When I used to use SUSE I noticed that the backend I used with Amarok impacted stability; Xine was the best, while some others led to rampant instability.

Hi,
check out the features of QMPDClient: Link In the list it clearly says "Multimedia keys support". If it's not working you could just mail a bug report to the author.

Yes indeed, not all tags are shown with stable mpd. But you can emerge mpd-svn, it's got better tag support. I'm using media-sound/mpd-svn-20060604 and it works just fine (all tags are shown). It also gets rid of libao and uses ALSA directly. Check it out.

Amarok is really amazing, BUT it takes up a lot of resources, especially compared to MPD. I have an old laptop on which I use MPD. As far as database support goes, check out this link detailing the plans for version 2 of MPD:

I think eventually MPD will converge towards having most of Amarok's features... What would be really cool would be if Amarok and MPD could use the same database to store statistics etc.

Try mpd+gmpc, it's really nice. If you want to get a ton of nice features that come with gmpc get layman and the mpd overlay and you'll have access to gmpc from subversion with all of it's new plugins. They're rather nice. And, yes, Multimedia keys work oob, and if it's not to your likeing you can set em up how you want them. |
