I need my gentoo machine to rename itself based on its name in DHCP/DNS.

In my /etc/conf.d/domainname its set to have DHCP override the localhost.localdomain crap.

What am I missing?

Maybe you need to set dhcp options for your interface (this can be done in /etc/conf.d/net)

From dhcpcd man page:
Code:
-D     Forces  dhcpcd  to  set  domainname  of  the host to the domainname option supplied by DHCP server.
