Hi,

I'm trying to do a stage1 install of Gentoo on a new box.
I'm currently doing:

Code:
emerge -e system

And I consistently get:

Code:
alculating dependencies... done!
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) dev-perl/Locale-gettext-1.05 to /
>>> checking ebuild checksums ;-)
>>> checking auxfile checksums ;-)
>>> checking miscfile checksums ;-)
>>> checking gettext-1.05.tar.gz ;-)
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking gettext-1.05.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/Locale-gettext-1.05/work
>>> Source unpacked.
>>> Compiling source in /var/tmp/portage/Locale-gettext-1.05/work/gettext-1.05 ...
 * Using ExtUtils::MakeMaker
checking for gettext... no
checking for gettext in -lintl... no
gettext function not found. Please install libintl at Makefile.PL line 18.

This lead me to believe that I need to install libintl-perl.

Doing this fails because perl is not yet installed.

If I try to emerge perl, the first package on the emerge
list is... wait for it... dev-perl/Locale-gettext-1.05!

I'm not really sure what to do at this point.

Here is my make.conf file:

Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe"

MAKEOPTS="-j2"
LINGUAS="en he"
# this is for after the install, when space is short
#PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"
#PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/space/var/tmp"
#PORTDIR="/space/portage"

SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

I appologize for the rant, but I just can't understand why the initial
"system" install has to have problems. I've installed Gentoo about
five times now, and everytime I have problmes emerging the system.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

According to the Gentoo Handbook & FAQ, stage1 & stage2 installs are not supported for end-users anymore, they are intended for the developers only.

The proper way now is to do a stage3 install & then do your empty-tree world rebuild.

In your situation, I'd try emerging libintl-perl or maybe gettext and move on.
