Well I eventually stumbled onto a workaround of sorts. Not enough that I am going to change the title of this thread to "solved", though.

Firefox is strange about caching. It caches an error message as if it were a page. Duh. So in some cases once it has a DNS error (aka "no such domain"), it caches the fact of there being an error so that when the doman actually gets resolved, firefox refuses to notice this. Stupid firefox: even IE does a better job.

A workaround is to hold the shift key down and then (still holding the shift key down) click the reload icon. Seems this forces firefox to reload the page for real, discarding the previously cached version.

if you're are using adsl router D-Link and using its DNS proxy feature it might be a reason.
I had problem that appeared similar to yours, in fact some applications where resolving all urls as 10.0.0.1 (and some like ping or nslookup worked ok).
Could this be your case?
