AFAIK there isn o way to tell wine to use any internet connection.
It should alredy use your existing connection.

I suspect the problem is that wine doesn't support a needed function that the installer expects or something like that.
Wine really isn't at a point where you can just install any windows software, especially slightly more complicated things like windows media player.

Well I did manage to find this solution that seemed to allow a temporary internet connection. It may be permanent, but I didn't stick around to see if it was.

This is from appdb.winehq.org

Experimental: Installing without Internet Explorer
It does not run when installed with this method, but perhaps someone can figure out which DLLs are required? This may also be useful for applications that require Media Player

* Place msxml3.dll and msxml3r.dll in Wine's windows/system32 directory (usually ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32)
* Run 'winecfg' and add a dll override for 'msxml3'
* Run 'regsvr32 msxml3.dll'
* Install Windows Media Player 9
