Code:

taka@pappie ~ $ wc -l /etc/portage/package.keywords
318 /etc/portage/package.keywords
taka@pappie ~ $

I think most of it are for xorg7 and kde stuff.

I myself prefer to have a stable arch, and personally use the unstable packages manually. I try as much as i can to reduce the =, and replace them with >= or <= when possible. Every now and then i check the list against portage, and see what i can comment out when the version becomes stable there. My list consists mostly of kde (i always like to have the latest kde).

Code:
 cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | wc -l
506

Code:
localhost ~ # cat /etc/portage/package.keywords

if you're running so many unstable packages, isn't it easier to switch to ~arch entirely? I'm sure you have a valid reason, but i'm just wondering.

Code:
$ cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | wc -l
856
$ cat /etc/portage/package.unmask | wc -l
460

I took the same conclusion and just started to run ~x86

Apps to me arn't that much of a problem, but one thing that scares me from going completly ~arch is the base system, and important packages, such as for eg, xorg, baselayout, udev, etc.. To me they can really break a system, and i'd rather put my trust on gentoo's devs to tell me which is stable enough and which isn't.

For me, i'd rather go for 1000 lines in there, being in control and knowing exactly what packages i'm going for, even if it takes a bit more time than usual (hey, it's fun!) =)

And hey, gentoo is gentoo ;)

Enjoy,

mostly xorg7, but 49 others either because stable didn't work/wasn't available at the time of install, or because I'm not terribly concerned with the stability of some programs

Very true.
But to me glibc, gcc, udev, baselayout, xorg, etc are very stable.
Each to his own ofcourse.

I have 38 items in package.keywords. I cut this list down quite a bit by using the dep script.

Running amd64 with kde, and Xgl:

Code:
cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | wc -l
837

Almost number one! And very stable as well.

Code:
$ cat /etc/portage/package.keywords
#sys-libs/glibc -~x86
#sys-devel/gcc -~x86
#sys-devel/binutils -~x86
#x11-base/xorg-x11 -~x86
sys-apps/baselayout -~x86
sys-apps/udev -~x86
sys-apps/sysvinit -~x86
sys-apps/module-init-tools -~x86
sys-kernel/linux-headers -~x86
I run complete ~x86 except for the ones in /etc/portage/package.keywords. I am updating glibc, gcc, binutils to unstable today and they will be gone from there too. Other 5 in there, I always run stable versions of those. I enumerate only dangerous packages in my /etc/portage/package.keywords. Its easier this way than to have 500 odd packages listed as unstable in there.

Wow... I thought I had a fairly sizable one... but I think you 800+ guys have me beat.

Mine's 302. Basically it's the Modular X list from the migration guide (need 7.1 for my video card) plus 6 of my own.

Just vim/gvim, vim-core, vim-spell, gtk-engines-qt, and amsn.

Code:
enchantrix portage # cat package.keywords
media-libs/alsa-lib -~amd64
media-sound/alsa-headers -~amd64
media-sound/alsa-driver -~amd64
games-sports/vdrift -* ~* *
media-sound/alsa-utils -~amd64
net-www/gnash -* ~* *
enchantrix portage # cat package.keywords | wc -l
6

Running on ~amd64.
-* ~* * is to unmask packages with no keyword.
-~amd64 is to use stable versions for those packages (I'm with a Sound Blaster Live, and i've had trouble with all ALSA release candidates (no MIDI, broken mixers, etc.))
