I emerged kdm, set the display manager in /etc/rc.conf to kdm, and did an rc-update add xdm default. The system would then boot into xdm, and xdm would not work--I would enter my user and password, the screen would go blank for a couple of seconds, and then I would be back at xdm. There is probably a config file somewhere in which I am supposed to define a desktop; I do not really care since I do not care to actually use xdm.
I have presently worked around this by removing xdm from the default runlevel, and adding kdm to /etc/conf.d/local.start. There are probably security implications to this that I do not understand, and I am curious why it is not working the right way. _________________ AMD 64 3200+ on GA-KV8T800 MB

1. Normally, setting kdm in /etc/rc.ocnf is sufficient.
2. Then add xdm with rc-upadte xdm default makes the login appear at the end of boot
3. Have a look at /var/log/messages and /var/log/xorg.0.log for errors.
I think, the failure it has to do something with the (maybe wrong) setup of X11. |
