Hi!
I have a strange problem with my DVD drive. It's suddenly just a *DVD* drive and writer (worked also as CD drive and writer some time ago). The LEDs blink a few times if I insert a CD but nothing happens, no kernel log file entry. I haven't changed anything in the kernel configuration, all device files are correct:
Code: | $ ls /dev/cdr* -l
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Jul 25 09:36 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Jul 25 09:36 /dev/cdrw -> hdc
$ ls /dev/dvd* -l
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Jul 25 09:36 /dev/dvd -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Jul 25 09:36 /dev/dvdrw -> hdc

The driver seems not to have any problems:
Code: | $ cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
CD-ROM information, Id: cdrom.c 3.20 2003/12/17
drive name: hdc
drive speed: 1
drive # of slots: 1
Can close tray: 1
Can open tray: 1
Can lock tray: 1
Can change speed: 1
Can select disk: 0
Can read multisession: 1

Trying to mount a CDROM manually ends in
Code: | # mount /dev/hdc /mnt/
mount: No medium found

With DVDs everything (automounting, reading and writing) works fine. Is the drive just broken?
A little strange is that during boot time the drive (which is the only one im my computer) seems to be both ide0 *and* ide1:
Code: | Probing IDE interface ide1...
hdc: DVD-RW IDE1008, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
Probing IDE interface ide0...
hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20

I'm using gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r4, ~amd64 system on an AMD X2 4200+.
[UPDATE] OK, tried to boot an old SUSE CD, that also didn't work, so I guess the drive is just broken. Unless anyone has a better idea I'll just replace it and will delete this thread if the new drive just works ...
[UPDATE 2] I just replaced the drive and CDROM access works again. So it seems like the drive was really broken. Strange error anyway, as I thought the DVD technology is much more comlicated than that of "oridinary" CDs ... So, sorry if I can't give any usefull help for other people with similar problems, except for trying with another drive.

Just a wild suggestion - can you try and open your machine up and change the IDE port of the DVD cable to something else and see what happens then?
Cheers
