I've installed ALSA and followed the ALSA guide here, but I'm getting the error
Code: | device: default can't be opened for playback (Invalid argument)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device |
Can anyone help me?
Thanks |

more info please. Are you running alsa in the kernel or as a module? Although you don't say it, I assume you get that error when starting X. Take one step back. Can you play from the command line? |

X is working fine, using ALSA from module. |

Maybe you can provide a little bit more information. Who is giving this error message? a program? a desktop manager sound daemon? What kind of sound card do you have? what kind of driver have you installed? are you trying to use a program with oss emulation? are the sound devices there? does an lspci list your sound card? _________________ only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars |

again: Take one step back. Can you play from the command line?
when do you get the error? Does the alsa module start without problems? Can you run alsamixer? |

_tyrone,
That looks reasonable. Are you in the audio group ?
Type groups to check. Add yourself, log our and login to pick up the new groups membership, if needed. _________________ Regards,

_tyrone,
Set up your sound in KDE - its trying to use the defualt device - whatever that is.
It may be set to a device you don't have, or an input only device ...
Trying to play sound through a webcam is usually disapporing. _________________ Regards,

can you try playing something from xmms or amarok, talking directly to ALSA (rather than arts)???
I was gonna suggest again playing something from the console, to make sure that ALSA is working, but I know that for some reason you don't like that idea |

Okay, I think it's KDE/aRt side that's the problem.
If I change a setting in art, it will say "Starting sound system" and once it reaches 100% go back to 0% and repeat. |

this sounds like it is trying to start arts and it can't. The thing is that you don't really need arts. Disable for the moment all sounds in kde. Then open up xmms or something and try to play some music by selecting ALSA directly (Rather than arts) as your sound device.
I would really also try things outside X. Try sending some random noise to the sound device, that doesn't require any special program. |

Aye, still not working.
I added myself into the audio group, but when I type groups in terminal, I can't see audio in it.
more info -
esd
Code: |
ALSA lib conf.c:3931: (snd_config_expand) Parse arguments error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib pcm.c:2146: (snd_pcm_update_noupdate) Unknown PCM hw:0,
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:862:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
|
Also, if I change my device in arts to ALSA, I'll get
Code: | device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device) |
and for Autodetect,
Code: | device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Premission denied) |
|

esd is something completely different and it doesn't really apply to KDE (which seems to be your DE). I really don't know what you are trying to do.
I've suggested some things that I would try to solve the problem, but it doesn't seem to follow your approaches. Wish you good luck with whatever you do. |
