I have been using diskless Gentoo, off and on for several years. Initially to experiment with OpenMosix but recently just to speed up compiling, encoding movies and to easily maintain several hosts with the same OS.
I found this awkward to do in the beginning, updating the shared OS meant I then had to sync the nodes filesystems and then reconfigure them, i.e. /etc/conf.d/hostname, /etc/fstab and so on. A long while ago I wrote a bash script to take care of some of this but recently I have written a Python script that does the job much better.
This script is available for anybody to use from: http://majikc.ath.cx/diskless
