i have finally got my NIC working in gentoo now i want to emerge a desktop environment, im not sure wether to do a or or whatever. I would really like to know whats a good and fast desktop, i am going to be using this on a AMD 533 with 56mb RAM. Previously i had RedHat 8.0 installed on it with the nice and shiny bluecurve but it was quite slow *sigh* then there was nautilus *sigh*.
But anyway im looking forward to some input on this.
Thank you |

I recommend just going with the base install. I do emerge kdebase kdeartwork kdeadmin, but the later two are extras. You definitely don't want to emerge kde if you are looking to keep things small. The base is the best way to go and just add things as you need them. To get X I just do emerge fluxbox though. _________________ What Larry was saying is that if you make it too easy for programmers, then poor programmers will be able to do things best left to good programmers, and will inevitably do them poorly. And with that much ram you may want to avoid DEs and just use fluxbox or icewm you might be much happier. _________________ What Larry was saying is that if you make it too easy for programmers, then poor programmers will be able to do things best left to good programmers, and will inevitably do them poorly.
