PostPosted: Fri Jul 28, 2006 4:09 am    Post subject: CSS Encryption Issues with IDE-SCSI Emulation! Reply with quote

This is my first post to the forum, so hopefully I give all the information necessary for help. I am currently running a new Pentium M Dell Laptop, with a gig of ram and a 128 mb video card and am having problems playing back CSS encrypted movies with Mplayer, or Xine, or Ogle. I had put an earlier kernel version of Gentoo on here a few months back before Vista Beta launched. I took off to try the public beta of Vista and quickly regreted it. I then quickly threw Gentoo back on and have been plugging away with my programming, music and old school gaming emulators, but have not tried to watch dvd's since the re-build. My cdrom runs scsi emulation and is unable to set any kind of DMA do to reasons I don't understand. You can probably get most other information from my configs. I am currently running:

    gcc (GCC) 3.4.6
    X window System Version 7.0.0
    Xine Version 0.99.4
    XFCE-4 4.2.3.2

Here is my dmesg:

When I attempt to run a CSS encrypted dvd with scsi cdrom emulation I get an error:
Code:

However, if I run the program without the scsi emulation then it will load the VOB's perfectly but my video is choppy and skips.

I am afraid that I might be doing something wrong in my configurations but all my other videos work fine and this one is ALMOST there, except choppy when I cut out my start-up command of hdc=ide-scsi.
Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

ultmtjstr,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You should not need ide-scsi (SCSI Emulation) with a 2.6.16-gentoo-r12 kernel but there are some exceptions.
You may be one of them too. The warning sign is, from your log
Code:
scsi1 : ata_piix

Your log shows that SCSI emulation was in use.
Code:
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5

Run lspci (emerge pciutils) and check your Intel chipset. If its ICH6 or ICH7 use SCSI emualtion and turn off IDE support entirely, you are not using it anyway.

The problem is that the ICH6 and ICH7 chipsets have some control registers in common between the PATA and SATA functions and they can obly be set properly from the SATA side.

No need for lspic - you log also says
Code:
ALSA device list:
  #0: Intel ICH6 with STAC9750,51 at 0xdffffe00, irq 16
You do have the ICH6 chipset.
Using SCSI emulation and disabling IDE should fix it.

I have got my SCSI Emulation to work perfectly fine. I took your advice and disabled IDE support all together and removed the pass-through to my kernel at boot, and it does automatically does emulation. This still didn't fix my problem however. With my SCSI emulation working, my "backup copied" dvd's play fine, as well as my older DVD movies. When I try to launch a newly purchase movie, for instance, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, it gives me an error of
Code:
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.4.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't allocate memory for file read!
libdvdread: Unable to read read TT_SRPT.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:859 ***

If I take away my SCSI emulation, then my player will read this disc fine, but makes ALL my dvd playback choppy, including my older and backed-up DVD's. I am afraid that it is due to a configuration error. The special features disc runs fine under SCSI Emulation, but the main feature will not even start. My first guess was that the permissions were off on the /dev/sr0, but I am accessing as root, so no go on that. I am curious if it could be something to do with libdvdread? Not quite sure. Thanks again.

ultmtjstr,

SCSI emulation and disabling IDE gets you DMA (for faster lower CPU use) on the CDROM reads.
When you use the CDROM as IDE, you don't get DMA and your playback is choppy as a result.
None of this should affect you ability to play any DVDs.
Code:
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't allocate memory for file read!
does not look like a Emulated SCSI vs IDE issue.

Can you test with mplayer please?
It provides more verbose descriptions of whats happening and whats not. You will need to run it from the command line in an xterm.
