crazy thing happened here....i installed windows on a physically different hard drive, then booted up gentoo and it hung on dhcpcd for like 5 minutes at boot. it finally loaded up w/o internet support. this has happened on all of my linux distros (mandriva, gentoo, kubuntu) since windows was installed. WTF ???? any ideas?
-----EDIT---------------------------------
Specific message is below
Code: | ERROR: Problem starting needed services. "netmount" was not started. |

The netmount error doesn't matter---it just means it couldn't start because of the lack of network connection.
Is there anything in the system log to explain this?
Does the network card work in Windows? |

yeah, it works in windos. it says also that it couldn't find a valid DHCP server. could this be b/c i have a domain name from the network that identifies me one way, but when i installed windows i chose a different name for the PC? |

i think this is probably a problem with the network, not the kernel or hardware of the PC. the card is functional, it just can't get a response from the DHCP server. this PC is at a university where access is pretty strictly controlled with MAC filtering, etc. i think that somehow when i logged on to the network with windows that the network read something about my configuration that it has stored in the filter server that now rejects my linux OS's (all of them, so it can't be specific to one config file) in favor of windows. i hade a domain name assigned to the MAC address of this PC, but have asked to have it removed to see if that helps. does any of the above sound plausible at all, i really stretching for an explanation here. i could test the PC w/another network, but i'd have to physically move it to do so. |

well....brought up DHCP capable router from home and hooked them up to it to see if they could get a response, but alas.....still can't even connect to the router . anybody have any ideas what could be going on here???? it worked fine b4 windows, now it won't work at all. the gentoo live CD won't even connect. i checked lsmod and it is running forcedeth driver as it was when it was working. why is this only affecting my linux distros??? |

Odd---I've been following your subsequent posts but couldn't really offer any help. Glad it's working now. Please do post an explanation if you work out what the issue was.
Find it hard to believe that just installing Windows would somehow cause this... did you ask your university's sysadmins for advice? |

yeah, and i got the basic "we don't support linux, sorry....hope you figure it out..." response.
it was really weird, all of my settings matched what i got under ipconfig in windows (i.e. DNS servers, DHCP servers, etc). the card was detected and could be initiated, it just wouldn't connect in any linux distro.....the really weird thing was the fact that it wouldn't even get a response from a totally pure dhcp router....i really think that maybe something in the bios got confused. immediately after disabling then re-enabling the on-board chipset it worked....still a mystery to me. |
