|
|
I know that the 2.5 kernels have v4l2 support built in with it, but I need it for the ivtv driver, which is incompatible with 2.5 at the moment. I know that there are many different 2.4 kernels available on portage. Do any of these have v4l2 patched in stock? |

I've tried using the latest gentoo-sources-r3 but they don't work either..
If you just use the vanilla kernel with the patch from bytesex.org, you should be fine.
However, I'd love to get it working with the gentoo-sources b/c that kernel makes my machine so much more responsive. |

Same sort of problem here. I need the drivers for the SAA7134 in. But the patches that are available at bytesex won't fit the patches that are applied to gentoo-sources (not that strange really
I remember that I saw some v4l2-patch pass on my screen when I emerged GS-2.4.20-r3, so v4l2 itself is in there. |

Yeah you're having the same problem I had. The patches from bytesex.org will patch against the vanilla-sources just fine. You can't patch them against the gentoo-sources because the gentoo sources are already patched with v4l stuff.
But for some reason, the ivtv driver will not compile with the gentoo-sources kernel, meaning they have the wrong patches, or something.
Basically what I did was apply the patches a fresh vanilla-sources, then copy each file that was patched over to the gentoo-sources, overwriting the ones in there.
After I did that I could compile the ivtv driver just fine, however now I'm having some smaller problems witht the display quality and I'm wondering iif its because of my hackjob. Let me know your progrss. It's good to have another gentoo user that's working on this! |

Whoot!
Your 'trick' worked.
I was able to compile the saa7134 module just fine after your, what you call 'hackjob'
Can't tell anything about visual quality tho just moved the machines and the TV cable isn't in this room (that I got banished to) yet.
But, the static is looking beautiful...
Hmm, anyone filed a bugreport about the newer v4l drivers to the kernelmaintainer? I'll check, if not, I'll do so.
Oh, about the picture quality... it's perfect here (yes, I put in a cable) |

I've found out that my problem with image quality is due to a problem with XV, or something -- it looks the same way when I play DVDs.
Could I ask you a HUGE favor? I'd like to know as much detail as possible about your setup, like:
- what kernel you're using
- your kernel .config file
- Gnome or KDE?, (if gnome, what version / window manager)
- XV version
- video card, driver version
That would help me to narrow down my problem with XV video quality.
If you want, you can email your kernel .config file (because its probably to big to paste) to me. my email is (replace the "_at_" with an "@") :
ben_at_xsusio.com
Thanks! |

.config can be found HERE.
As for kernel:
Code: |
bash-2.05b$ uname -a
Linux xp 2.4.20-gentoo-r3 #4 Wed May 7 19:30:50 CEST 2003 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1900+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
|
Displaymanager is KDE (3.1.1a)
Videocard is a nVidia GeForce4 4600 (with twinmon enabled) with latest nvidia drivers, which are 1.0.4363
TV-Grabber is a Terratec 400.
Dunno about the XV version, where can I find that?
Oh, and for TV watching I use tvtime, it has better image quality than motv, which is better (imho) than xawtv. |

Thanks!
I just thought of something else it might be.. Could you also post your XF86Config file I've got a GeForce 4 ti 4200, but no twinview at the moment.. (although I did earlier).. So I'm assuming our setup is pretty similar. |

Just FYI the latest v4l2 stuff from bytesex is in gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r4.

Pfeifer, saw it in the changelog, and, with great anticipation, I am downloading it now! Thanks....

BTW, here is my XF86CFG (for two monitors enabled...) I have also one with three monitors enabled (GF4 + SIS something card) but that one is not needed here I think...
http://www.upontheattic.nl/XF86Config
Oh, btw. There are two ways of configging the GF4. One with the options within the GF4 part of XF86Config, and one with xinerama and TWO GF4's declared. The last one is what I use when in tripple monitor mode. |

Good news.
The new kernel is up and running here, and the building of the SAA7134 driver against it went flawlesly!
Thanks! |

Man I've upgraded everything I possibly can and I still have the same problem... However, my brain just chimed in and I decided to check my XFree86.0.log, and I found this error:
Code: | (EE) Failed to load module "xv" (module does not exist, 0) |
I changed the load module line to say "xvideo" like you have in yours and I get the same problem:
Code: | (EE) Failed to load module "xvideo" (module does not exist, 0) |
Ok, so maybe my problem is because the xv module isn't loading right? I don't know.. Is it already built in to xfree or something?
I've installed gentoo-sources-r4 as well as the latest xfree (4.3.0-r2), so I've got no clue what to try from here... any help would be more than appreciated. |

Hmm, I just looked at my XFree86.0.log, and I have that same error overhere, neither xv nor xvideo are known modules at my system...
But... no probs here?!? Oh, I autoload the saa7134 (with all it's dependencies at bootup. Also did that with the bttv driver. for when I don't do that, xfree will freak out. |

I thought it was saa7115?? Where's the saa7134 come from (and what does it do, anyways?) I'm using the saa7115.o that comes with the compiled ivtv drivers...
I found out that you don't need to load "xv" or "xvideo" because loading "v4l does that automatically, I guess. So, XV is loading fine... but I still can't find out what's causing my fullscreen issues. |

Hmm, maybe a slight misunderstanding here...
I have a Terratec Cinergy 400, and that thing needs the saa7134 driver (see bytesex) the overlapping part of our problem was in the V4L2 stuff in the kernel. |
