The package is no longer in portage and there's no replacement for it. As such, I can't upgrade to the latest kernel without losing the ability to use Fn+Fx hotkey combos. Is there any way I can get this functionality back?

It's gone as it's in the kernel, see http://marc2.theaimsgroup.com/?l=gentoo-dev&m=114571767721690&w=2

Well, it's not working. I don't get any acpi events with kernel 2.6.17 w/o ibm-acpi. I've enabled all the ACPI stuff in the kernel, including anything that said IBM or Thinkpad, but still nothing.

I have the same problem. Both 2.6.16-suspend2-r8 and 2.6.17-r4 have ibm-extras enabled in the kernel, but cannot see any reaction when using acpi_listen.

found the solution. If you enable the ibm-extra in the kernel, then the drive is already enabled, and you have to activate the hotkeys
Code:
echo enable > /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey

I dont know why they are not enabled by default.
