I'm running GDM with Gnome and everytime I log out, I get a blank screen with textbox sized white box in the middle of the screen and nothing else. If I try to switch to a tty, I get flashing red lines, if I try to restart x with ctrl alt backspace, it restarts but with the same issue. I can type in my username and password (although no text appears on the screen) and the gnome starts to load, but before anything actually fully loads, system hangs and is unresponsive. The only way I can ever logout is by killing the gdm.
this probably only recently started happening, I'd go back through my changes but there is just so many things i've emerged since then and I wouldn't know where to begin.

does anyone have any ideas on what I should try to do to fix this?

Are you an ATI/fglrx user? If so, set AlwaysRestartServer=true in gdm.conf. It is a bug in the ati-drivers.

No problem. I've been using it as a workaround for a few months now...no idea when ati will fix it. They don't seem to acknowledge support requests unless you use Red Hat or Suse  |

Hi, is there a workaround for KDM too? I experience the same problem, the only difference is I'm running KDE with KDM.
I searched for a kdm.conf, but could'nt find it and in kdmrc there is no option "AlwaysRestartServer="  |

I'm pretty sure there is, but it won't be called the same thing. I don't use KDE, so I'm not sure, but I would suggest reading through kdm.conf, or whatever the relevant file is.

Just found this:-
add
| Code: | | TerminateServer=true |
to kdmrc.
Like I said, I don't use it, so I don't know if it will work.
