I've been trying to install Gentoo, on an AMD XP, box with two drives.

I can install Ubuntu, Knoppix. Their LiveCDs work just fine, but the Gentoo LiveCD is not recognized as a bootable CD. (All of which I burned off the .iso downloads.) Well, I don't want those two. I want Gentoo! Both of my optical drives are Sony CD-R and a Panasonic DVD-RAM.

Am I burning the LiveCD wrong? I can read it with Win XP, but it just won't boot from it.

Also, is it necessary, when you are installing Linux with Windows, that the Windows files all be contiguous? I can get them close, but I have a few stray files that hang out deep on the drive--these are not the pagefile, etc. They are program or data files. If they do need to be contiguous, what is the utility I need to use to move them into contact with the other Win files? Does this create problems for the creation of partitions?

Thanks,

Russ

Did you try to reburn the cd. Probably something is wrong with the cd.
I always make free space on the hard drive with partition magic and then create new partitions on the free space for installing linux.

Yeah, I've tried to reburn the disks: LiveCD, Full Install and Live Installation.

None of them work. Weird.

Also, is their anything freeware out there to move files other than partition magic?

check the md5 checksum. the simple thing to do, is try booting on a different comp... at least youll know for sure.

If you're willing to install gentoo throught the CLI (is that what you mean by Live Installation?), you can always use the Knoppix cd and install from there.
