hey all,

my laptop's hdd recently started corrupting on me.
i've removed it from my laptop and hoocked it up to my desktop through a ide=>usb adaptor.

the hdd has 3 partitions, beig /boot (ext2), swap and / (ext3).
when i first hoocked it up i made a big mistake my running fsck with the badblocks options (nondistructive read/write mode) and now the hdd is totally trashed.

when i try to mount the '/' partition wich is sdc3 i get a superblock corrupt error.
trying fdisk -l shows no partitions at all. I tried mke2fs -n options to retreive alternative superblocks but non of them seem to work.

Now, i would realy love to get that '/' parition to mount and retreive my home folder.

a.f.a.i.c.t there is only one option left for me, and that is to rebuild the superblocks by using "mke2fs -s".

Anyone has any ideas on how i could retreive my data (even if it was partially).

1. You should use a Live CD like Knoppix or Gentoo to manipulate the partition
2. mke2fs -S tries to write the superblocks new. Have a look at man mke2fs for further details
3. You could even format the partitions new and recover the data. If the data is source code (plain text) the results will be good. But you have to know the exact boundaries of the partitions. Use google with the following text:" +undelete +ext3"
4. You can use the Systemrescue CD: http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
5. You can use testdisk to recover the partitions: http://www.libe.net/themen/geloeschte-Partition-wiederherstellen.php

Hi,

you could try to use an alternative superblock (see "man e2fsck"), and maybe findsuper (I dont know whether this exists anymore) may be helpful.

Good luck
