|
|
Hi,
is there a way to install a GCC 4.2 for testing without interfering with the installed GCC used for compiling portage programs? I only want to have the GCC for testing and compiling my own "code snippets", therefore the GCC should be "invisible" and should not interfere with the installed GCC from portage.
Is there a way to do that? |

You can have multiple versions installed on your system, just switch the compiler profile whenever you want to compile your 'code snippets.' |

So I just download GCC, config / make / make install it (there are no official 4.2 ebuilds), and it works? Doesnt it overwrite the current GCC? How do I change GCC? |

Don't do this, it will destroy the gentoo magic.

Sure there is:
Code: | [-P-] [M-] sys-devel/gcc-4.2.0_alpha20060715 (4.2) |

http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=gcc
"Not available"
Also:
Code: | ~# echo "=sys-devel/gcc-4.2.0_alpha20060715" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
~# emerge -vau gcc
Nothing to merge; would you like to auto-clean packages? [Yes/No] |

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=gcc-4.2*" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-devel/gcc-4.2.0_alpha20060715 (masked by: package.mask, missing keyword)
# Mark Loeser <halcy0n@gentoo.org> (11 Apr 2006)
# GCC 4.2 snapshots; use with extreme care and only report bugs if you have
# a patch
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook. |
