I was looking at picking up a board with a NForce3-250gb chipset (Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939) and I was wondering about the Nvidia hardware raid on it. I see you can use it with PATA and SATA drives. Does the RAID support work in linux, and does anyone know if it is a true hardware raid, or just a software on? |

These controllers are for software Raid.
For hardware raid, you have to buy a additional card from 3Ware or Areca. |

I believe...I could be mistaken...
(fact) there IS raid/lvms support in linux.
(as for me) I have an intel board with an onboard RAID controller that I'm using... and it's relatively easy to do, considering I've never touched on raid/lvms before today. You'd have the same type of thing where you have a bios raid (if you look for guides that's the term to know.
I'm personally using this guide and it's going well so far.
I do not know about IDE (pata) raid... I'm sure if your mobo supports it then you're fine, but I'm all sata. (I'd suggest you go sata also if it's do-able)
