Hey everybody. I'm a bit lazy with upgrading kernels, and I really only want to do upgrades from, for example, version 2.6.16-r* to 2.6.17-r*. In other words, I don't want spend time to emerging and compiling 2.6.16-r1, 2.6.16-r2, etc. Is there a line I can add to /etc/portage/package.mask that will allow me to only install 2.6.**-r1 kernels?

Code:
echo '=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.1*-*' >> /etc/portage/package.mask

That'll block all kernel updates unless theres a new release in the 2.6.* area.

Couldn't you just wait till the new kernel releases come out and not upgrade until? I don't see a point in doing it manually.

Hello!

I have solved this by not having the kernel in the world file
Code:
# emerge --oneshot gentoo-sources-version
and then putting a line in /etc/portage/package.provided to tell portage that there is a kernel available in the system.
Code:
$ cat /etc/portage/package.provided
=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.16.4
