|

I wasn't sure if this should be AMD64 or Unsupported Software
I downloaded Parallels Workstation (http://parallels.com/en/download/workstation/) they have ebuilds, but when I looked at the contents of the ebuilds they are all keyworded: KEYWORDS="-* x86"
Is it possible for me to install Parallels onto my system using amd64? I tried adding amd64 to the keywords but
Code: |
pandora ~ # parallels-config
Configuring Parallels Workstation 2.1 build 1670
Configuring Parallels Workstation 2.1 drivers...
Can not configure! Read /usr/lib/parallels/doc/INSTALL
and follow instructions specified in this document.
Error log is available at /usr/lib/parallels/comp.log.10711.error
Also you can check configuration log at /usr/lib/parallels/config.log
|
Code: | pandora ~ # cat /usr/lib/parallels/comp.log.10711.error
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
checking for gcc... gcc
cut...
checking for x86 platform... configure: error: x86 platform is not supported |

Moved from Gentoo on AMD64 to Unsupported Software.
[mod]Since this is not an official package but it has an ebuild, I believe it belongs in US[/mod] _________________ Jorge.

According to their FAQ:
"Parallels Workstation 2.1 runs successfully on 64-bit platforms if a 32-bit primary OS is installed on it. Support for 64-bit primary and guest OSes is in scope for future versions of Parallels Workstation."
Perhaps it would work under a chroot though, unless a 32-bit kernel is required.
I'm really regretting going full 64-bit myself.I'm discovering too many programs out there are 32-bit only and don't have easily obtainable binaries available.
I guess its time to create a chroot, but its such a waste of harddisk space and time.
EDIT: was just reading through parallel's forums and it appears it will only work with a full 32-bit OS (which means no chroot). The next release will have 64bit support apparently: http://forum.parallels.com/thread450.html |

Ah ok thanks
I tried using Xen, but i found the setup to be really difficult. I followed http://www.gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xen_and_Gentoo but this article isn't really very clear about anything (Dom0, DomU...)
My major question is when I get to the Grub Config
Code: | title Xen 3.0 / Linux 2.6.x.y
root (hd0,0)
kernel /xen.gz dom0_mem=98M
module /vmlinuz-2.6.x.y-xen0 root=/dev/md2 |
Quote: | The dom0_mem hypervisor option sets the amount of memory to be allocated to domain0 (in this case 98MB). In Xen 3.x the parameter may be specified with a B, K, M or G suffix, representing bytes, kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes respectively; if no suffix is specified, the parameter defaults to kilobytes. Note: 98M lead to insufficient memory errors with 2.6.16.18 |
What is this memory I have to specify at boot time? The total amount of memory the Dom0 can access? What I am trying to do is run Gentoo as Dom0 90% of the time and Win XP (I have a Pentium D with VT) as a DomU; Is there a way to resize my memory usage after boot time instead of basically losing the ram set aside for XP 90% of my time?
Also I assume that the root device in the grub config should be something other than /dev/md2, like /dev/hda3, or /dev/sda3 depending on my actual boot device? |
