Network Stress Test

I would like to run some network stress testing to see how my Gentoo server would handle high network loads, what would be the best way to test this without a live and heavy network?

I think your best bet would be to search for a linux packet generator ( I found at least 4 in a 2 second search ), get another machine or two on this network, and start generating packets.
you could also find programs to stress test the specific network applications you are running and perhaps trying some DoS scans from Nessus.
