Dual Monitors - Geforce2 gts and Rage 128 Pro (GL) problem

i have a dual monitor setup with a geforce 2 gts agp (nvdriver and nvidia_glx installed) and an ati rage 128 pro(gl) pci - and while the geforce2 is performing better than i could have ever hoped using the new nvidia drivers in DRI mode, i can't get any opengl performance out of the rage 128
kde is running great - looks great on both monitors too
here's my symptoms -
gl screensavers won't even start on the rage... it sits at desktop
glxgears is a black box when dragged over to the rage
and here's the really weird one -
xine's output is black and white on the rage -
i read thru the forums and tried the r128 driver in my xconfig and while that was the only way to get and output from xine (and others) onto the rage it would regularly crash X when running any wine apps on that window (and in fact would lock the machine up hard after crashing X - no terms, no numlock response - reboot required) so i switched back to the plain ati driver

now.. this is the 16mb pci opengl version of this card.. it's not the run-of-the-mill rage 128 - this card is explicitly supposed to support opengl (hence the GL tag) so i'm very confused
