I used to get some error messages whenever I switched to root using su -. In a web site, I saw that the problem could be fixed by running etc-update. After running it, and overriding bunch of stuff I screwed up most of my configuration. Is there a way to recover? |

Hi,
I know this situation and I'm always a bit stressed when running etc-update! I always read carrefully which file are giong to be updated...
Hopefully etc-update generates backups of modified files, you should be able ro retrieve them but you should remember, at least, how etc-update has renamed backup files (I don't remember it myself, sorry) _________________ Powered by Gentoo Linux since 2003 |

I dont't know how to recover your old config, but I suggest you to use cfg-update instead of etc-update, I think is's better |

If your not carefull etc-update can break alot since it has the nice but dangerous "do all and dont tell" feature. I remeber once with my old laptop that I had not updated it in a couple of mounth (6-7) so when I did emerge -uDpv world it was basicly the same as doing a emerge -e world ^^
After that I was left with 400 config files to be updated. After going through a few of them I just decided what the hell I dont have a clue what any of these does anyway and boom my system was trashed into oblivion (or not really but almost ^^). I ended up doing a reinstall since I was to lazy and to much of a oldschool windows user back then to even botter trying to solve it myself.
Anyway today I have started to use dispatch-conf instead since it is a little nicer on you (even filled a bug/enhancement and hopefully it will go through ) _________________ From Gentoo with love |
