ok so this is my first shot at linux. its not as easy as windows but being free it will do. i got as far as extracting the stage tarball i got from links. im using the amd64 handbook as my guide. i guess half a minute into extraction i get a bunch of error messages saying that theres not enough room on the disk and the extraction terminates and sets me back a step. well im using a 20g hard drive and followed the handbook step by step correcty (i think) and not sure what to do now... help please |

You must be extracting to the RAM disk created by the boot CD. You must have missed the step about mounting the file system:
Make sure to read all of this _________________ Desktop: ABit AN8, Athlon64 X2 4400+ 939 2.75GHz, 2x1GB Corsair XMS DDR400, 2x160GB SATA RAID-0, 2x20"W, Vista Ultimate x64

Did you verify that you indeed mounted the hard drive in the correct place and that you are extracting the tar file to it.
I've made that mistake once, if you don't extract the file to the right path you will just be extracting it into RAM, and will most likely run out of space in doing that. |

thanks guys for the help above what i did was make i typo in the mounting proccess and put -0 instead of -O in some code but now im stuck again. ok i got past the extraction part and the i got up to updating the portage tree. a message came up and warned that a new portage was available and that i should upate the portage. i did using the code "emerge portage" and it started then displayed an error message a few lines down saying "scanelf.c:1:error: CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set". i think it means i selected the wrong type of something for a different cpu, but i dont know what it is... help again please. |
