|
|
I have this default pty setting activated in my kernel, for 255 max ptys, but unfortunately i get only between 0 and 3.
When i start konsole i can open 2 more inside until i get the message "not enough ptys"
When i try to start a xterm i cant even open one.
"Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys"
I now nothing about this pty-stuff, is there something i can do or check?
My console-logins on F1-F6 look ok. |

Clearly you need some more /dev/pty's.
I suspect that creating a few more with 'mknod' would do the trick. Did you changed something lately?

ahh /dev/pty thats interesting, thx.
Well if i changed something?
Not that i know of but i had some trouble with filesystem errors and there was some error with the dev-filesystem too but i had a backup of my whole / ... but who knows.
So i look into dev and there is lots of pty stuff in there.
i have a directory /dev/pty/ with 256 entries, from m0 to m255 and all same rights and stuff.
5472508 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 2, 94 Jan 1 1970 m94
Well they are a little old, from 1.1.1970 maybe they have expired ?
Ok other than those i also have entries in /dev/ from ptya0 to ptyzf.. oh these are links to that in /dev/pty/.
4423964 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Mar 26 18:58 ptyz6 -> pty/m166
There is another strange behaviour i didnt mention.
When i start gnome-terminal, and from inside it try to start another new gnome-terminal, i get the new window, but without content.
When i then try to close that window, X crashes (restarts).
Well, what could i try.. it happens on all DesktopEnvironments/WindowManagers and it happens since.. maybe 1 week.
Oh one more question:
The console-logins, those from F1 to F6, are these ptys considered as already assigned?
If so maybe i have the other 249 ptys on F13-F262?
................ probably not |

Odd. Did you try to deactivate /dev/pts (as suggested) in kernel?

yes i tried it with activated and deactivated.
i also tried different kernel.
Damn.
The only X-Terminal that starts is konsole (from kde).
All other X-Terminals (xterm eterm gnome-terminal) refuse to even start ("not enough ptys")
With konsole i can run 3 logins inside, in tabs, no more.
God, isnt that odd ??
Im really curiouse about what solution the future will bring, if it will.

Yes
I have a second harddisk and im rsyncing my / every once in a while.
When doing this somehow a /dev/.devfsd gets created on the target-disk, and when i boot it there appears a error at bootup (which i didnt see because its not in the logs) where gentoo tries to delete this .devfsd but fails. This was the cause for the pty-trouble as well as for another problem i had.
Deleting the .devfsd fixed it. |
