i have recently installed gentoo on my x86 via the LiveCD and i cant get the wireless network to work

i have a linksys WUSB11V4.0 wireless USB adapter but gentoo doesnt recognize it

ive done some research and found this is a "Prism2" device and i can install it with linux-wlan-ng which i found the 'ebuild' file of, but when i try to emerge it gentoo tries to connect to the internet to install it and it fails! how ironic, lol

obviously theres something im not understanding here...

im quite the newb at linux :? , any suggestions

You will have to connect into an hard network, if you have wireless and a fairly new laptop i dont see why that would be a problem. Also a Wiki that seems to be perfectly geared for you is here http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Prism2_USB_on_Gentoo

ok, im trying to hard wire into the network but its not working

i have a crossover cable connected between my gentoo desktop and iBook (which is connected to the internet wirelessly)

on the iBook, i went to the internet sharing prefrences and I'm trying to share the connection from airport card (wireless adapter i guess) to built in ethernet on the other pc

on the gentoo box i setup my conf.d/net like this:

iface_eth0="192.168.1.105 broadcast 192.168.1.255 netmask 255.255.255.0"
gateway="eth0/192.168.1.100"

then i run a eth0 start, and when i type ifconfig i get something like:

eth0 Link encap: UNSPEC HWaddr 00-11-11-00-00-3A .......```````````````````````````````
-00
inet addr............

but no connection what so ever, i get a "Destination Host Unreachable" when i try to ping the iBook, the wireless router or anything else

any suggestions?

ok, so i found the "built-in ethernet" (aka network card on the iBook) has a dhcp ip address, 169.254.88.18, and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 which is different from the wireless network associated with the iBook (255.255.255.0)

what does this ip address mean?

how can i configure the gentoo box to connect to this iBook and share its internet connection??? (btw i already set up internbet sharing on the iBook) do i have to set the gentoo's ip address to the one this iBook is gicing me??? ive tried a few combinations and nothing has worked

any sugestions?
