|
|
Trying to install a simple gentoo setup strictly according to Quick Install Guide - all fine until:
Code: | livecd / # mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
livecd / # cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/
livecd / # chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
Illegal instruction
livecd / #
|
I've tried this 5 times with a few variations, and spent quite a time digging through forums and Google - nearest I've found is https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=69265.html but it's quite old and doesn't help me with a resolution.
Processor is AMD K6-2 (suspect from forums this might be the issue)
Installation CD contains install-x86-minimal-2006.0.iso
I really would appreciate some guidance,
Thanks,
Jim.

All amd k6 processors are i586 cpu's. So make sure you have an x86 minimal cd, not an i686 or higher. Same for the stage file you are using, get the x86 version, not i686 or something else. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Definitely using install-x86-minimal-2006.0.iso - I tried amd64 just in case and it didn't get very far before it confirmed the processor didn't support 64bit |

jaydublu,
You have the right install CD but the wrong stage 3 tarball. With the wrong CD you get continuous reboots.
Get the stage 3 tarball with i586 in its name, not i686. _________________ Regards,

Sounds like a good plan - run out of time today; will try it tomorrow and report back.
Thanks for the help,
Jim. |

That indeed cracked it - now onto the next hurdle.
Many thanks for your assistance,
