post what you get for lspci and lsmod, i had a similar problem. first you have to be sure that you have dhcpcd installed, then what i did was add my net driver module to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

if lsmod doesn't show anything loaded on the hard disk boot, load up the live cd and run lsmod, it will tell you what module is being used by the CD, but if i remember right and you are running a genkernel, then you should have the right module in there somewhere

Just looks to me like you forgot to install dhcpcd.

# emerge net-misc/dhcpcd

thankfully i was able to access it off the hard disk under root :)

ok,...(um....thats a bunch of stuff to copy down and post...)
it lists a bunch of devices but im guessing you want this one?

Code:
00:11:0 Ethernet controller: ALi Corporation Uli 1689,1573 integrated ethernet. (rev 40)

and for the lsmod...
it says "module", then "size" then "used by"

under it is a bunch of dif... codes..
is there a certain one your looking for?

i tried that with no problems but it still shows the message  ..

well, to know which one is your net module, you might run the live CD and do lsmod, the modules it picks are usually the ones it wants to use. for example, mine uses forcedeth b/c its an nvidia chipset. if you built a genkernel, it should have the right module in there somewhere, most likely. consequently, and i don't know if this will help in your case or not, mine seemed like a BIOS glitch. if i went into the bios and disabled the onboard lan chipset, booted with it off, then re-enabled and booted again it worked.

if thats the same as typing it in root, then i get:

Code:
Error, dhcpStart: ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device

ok i ran lsmod with the live cd and i get the same as i did befor..

then after mounting gentoo i go into /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 using nano and the file is empty... does that mean something?

so are you saying to add every module name that i see in lsmod directy into /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 using nano?

nah, just add the one you need. i think the module you need is called something like "uli...", had this one too. or, compile it directly into your kernel (better option), just chroot into your install, cd /usr/src/linux and make menuconfig. the driver is under drivers->network->100mbit->tulip-based->uli-something, make sure it's compiled in, then re-install your kernel.

this time you seem to have dhcpcd, but only the device driver is missing, it should work after this.

Hi.

You should start by looking at the output of ifconfig -a. Make sure that your eth0 isn't an IEEE1934 - Firewire port.
Then make sure that you emerged a dhcp client. Possible packages are dhcp, dhcpcd, dhcp-agent, udhcp and pump.

hey guys thanks for all the support

i finally have gentoo running

the uli M526x module/driver (my onboard lan module/driver) was not built into the genkernel
so i did the manual kernel installation and added it that way

it took a while to respond becuase it took till bout 30min ago that to realize that i had to edit the GRUB to be compatible with it.

so now im installing KDE.. and... itll be a while i guess

i also ran emerge -update -deep world (which took like 3+ hours)

but now its running with no problems

so things to remember:

-double check for typos befor posting dumb messages
-install kernel manualy
-dont use emerge portage

oh ya i only put like 5Gigs on the hda3 partition(i still have 10G of empty space).. is that ok? (will it fill up fast?, and complete kde installation?)

it could fill up quick if you have a lot of personal files.....i have only minimal split-ebuild kde witha few kde aps, xorg, and thats about all thats large and m /usr directory alone holds about 3 or 4 GB. if you have any extra space you could go back and make a separate /usr or /home partition and mount it up with fstab. i have /usr, /var, /var/tmp/portage, and /home all on separate partitions from /, but thats not all necessary

so your saying after kde is finished installing, go back into fdisk and create another.. primary?.. partition? and call is lets say... /usr or /home?
and i can access files in it with kde as if i were to access /hda3?

not really. it only works if you have spare unpartitioned space on the drive. if you used it all at the first (i.e. you allocated all of the available disk space already) DON"T mess with it unless you want to install again. you can resize partitions by booting up a knoppix disk (or something similar) that has gpart, but that's another story....if you're just going to play around w/gentoo for a while i'd leave it alone for now

when i was creating the hda3 partition i made it 5GB leaving about 10GB of "unpartitioned" space left on my drive. so i think later on i might make another 5GB partition for personal files.. eventually i will be getting a new drive.. hopefully SATAII since its compatible with my mboard. thanks a bunch i might be back if i have more problems but i think i can take it from here..
