The NVIDIA drivers just refuse to work for my xconfig... The card is an AGP 6600 GT. Here's the log:
Code: |
kernel install path : (not specified)
proc mount point : /proc
ui : (not specified)
tmpdir : /tmp
ftp mirror : ftp://download.nvidia.com
RPM file list : (not specified)
Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> License accepted.
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes)
-> No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site;
this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for
your kernel.
-> Performing CC test with CC="cc".
ERROR: Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in
'/lib/modules/2.6.20-gentoo-r8/source'. Please make sure you have
installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are
properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you
have the 'kernel-source' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel
source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with
the '--kernel-source-path' command line option.

Go into /usr/src/linux (should be a symlink pointed to whichever kernel you want to have the nvidia modules installed) and prepare your kernel. Then try emerging nvidia-drivers again. |

Assuming you have previously built the kernel at some point make modules_prepare is a short way of just getting it ready for modules that are compiled separately. |

Kernel was built using Genkernel,
I'm trying an updated nVidia script now, after I adjust my Kernel to exclude nVidia riva support. |

Yes that's my bad. I was using an nVidia script to install my graphics drivers that is slightly out of date. |

If you don't mind me asking, why not just use the nvidia-drivers package in portage? |

My reasons there are fair: The nVidia script configures the video drivers in Xorg for you, and also it configures your monitor setup for you.
It keeps it simple. I don't want to fight with Xorg to get things working. |
