I'm trying to setup my Gentoo box as a router for my home network, so today I bought a D-Link DFE-530TX+ (Rev. F1) to use as a second NIC. When I run lspci, I get:

So I installed the VIA Rhine III driver (tried both built-in and as a module), but I can't seem to get it to work. Here is the boot output from dmesg:

Every time I load the module, it always takes the link down immediately.
Here's the info for my onboard NIC:

| Okay, so upon unplugging my DSL modem from my onboard LAN and plugging it into my D-Link card, I suddenly got a green light on the network card. So my question is: do I need something special for my second NIC to act as an "uplink"? When I plug it in to either the WAN or Uplink ports on my old Linksys wireless router, it doesn't work. Do I need a crossover cable or something? |

| The crossover cable did the trick. I haven't seen this posted in any of the HOWTOs, so I'll say it here: if you want your Gentoo system to be able to act as a router, and want to plug it in to a WAN or Uplink port somewhere else, you'll need a crossover cable. |
