I downloaded the rc4 iso mainly to check out the framebuffer booting (btw it looks awesome!!), and noticed you could run memtest86 instead of loading the kernel (enter "memtest" at the prompt)
It found 21 errors on the first pass at the speed I had my motherboard running at!!
Now this is, and has been a stable system. It's a P4, 1.7 with 512 Mb RDRAM that I had been running at 1.87 Ghz, or 10% over. I had to back it off to 1.75 GHz to get one error free run.
To say the very least, I was stunned. The system is running Gentoo, and has happily compiled everything including a few recent upgrades of OpenOffice. I would not have bothered emerging memtest86 due to the stability of the system - I mean, it works, and it compiles, right?
I highly recommend running this against your machine(s), whether you O/C or not, but especially if you do. |
