PostPosted: Wed Aug 16, 2006 5:55 pm    Post subject: Questions about XGL Reply with quote

I recently downloaded the Kororaa XGL Live CD and became interested. I have a couple of questions about using it with Gentoo.

0. Xgl will run (almost) any WM, so long as it supports Composite, correct? (i.e. KDE)

1. I currently run X.org with KDE 3.5 I realize I will need to update to X.org 7.x, but can I simply do an "switch" from X.org to Xgl and get the desired effect? Or will a complete re-install be better? (I realize that it would be "easier", but who needs that?)

2. Is Xgl considered somewhat stable? From what I've read, it seems to be alright.

(edit: sorry, added question '0' so I didn't have to renumber them all... plus it's extra nerdy)

Well you can read that first, even if XGL is pre-installed on your machine :
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL
About X modular, check that one:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg

Xgl is experimental software, don't use it if you are not prepared to deal with accidental crashes... other than that, I used it at home daily without much problems. My 2 issues remaining are artefacts when using totem/mplayer and need to play game on a separate Xorg to have the 3D acceleration.

Xgl come with his own WM named compiz... KDE is a desktop environment.

The Kororaa LiveCD uses Gnome. I get the impression that I can use KDE if I wish with Xgl, is this correct?

BTW, thanks for your reply. I had checked the Howto's earlier, but I wanted some "testimonials". It sounds like you used it in the same way that I would. I don't do anything too intensive, so I should be fine using it as my primary box.

As far as I know, Kororaa uses KDE. The Live CD with Gnome is called Gororaa.

Anyway I am using Gnome only. I cannot tell you about KDE. I know it has been adapted for it, but I don't know how well integrated that is.

No, that's wrong: the default desktop on Kororaa is Gnome, but it also contains KDE.

From what I've read on the site, Kororaa's standard DE is KDE, the subproject Gororaa is the gnome version.

When I booted the Kororaa XGL live CD, it started Gnome.

Please read the website before commenting !!!

So Kororaa is KDE based, Gororaa is Gnome based. Both include both DE.

The XGL live CD is a case apart as XGL/compiz was only working on Gnome at first, the authors released a XGL LiveCD of Kororaa using Gnome as a default desktop. This is an oudated version now as XGL/compiz have evolved a lot since that.

By the way, XGL not being in portage, you might want to setup your computer using a more recent Kororaa CD and then use the HOWTO to move to XGL after that.

If you log out of Gnome in Kororaa you can choose KDE or if your fast enough at boot you can choose KDE from the drop down menu in sessions.

Either way KDE works great with Xgl, esp. with compiz-quinnstorm and cgwd.

I've been running XGL/Compiz-quinnstorm from xgl-coffee overlay for months
on KDE and it runs great. It is experimental and burps from time to time
depending on rev but overall it runs pretty damn good.
