PostPosted: Tue Aug 15, 2006 4:03 pm    Post subject: Which Hard Disk to Choose for hda Reply with quote

I have three old HDDs lying around and would like advice on which one is best to use;

One is this (installed at the moment hence the dmesg output)...

hda: Maxtor 86480D6, ATA DISK drive
hda: max request size: 128KiB
hda: 12594960 sectors (6448 MB) w/256KiB Cache, CHS=13328/15/63, UDMA(33)
hda: cache flushes not supported

One alternative is this

WD200BB View EIDE Hard Drives 20 GB, 100 MB/s, 2 MB Cache, 7200 RPM - 20 gig

and one is this....

Hard drive - ATA-33 - 33.3 MBps - None - 17 gig

2nd question is I seem to have differnet IDE cables some have thinner wires and others have thicker wires, do I need to be careful which I use ?

cheers

bb

Choose the 20 GB drive, it is the biggest and fastest of the 3.

Thanks I will.

And the IDE cables - do they make a difference or if it works is that it ?

Oh, sorry. Forgot about the cables... Use the ones with the thinner wires (should also have twice as much wires as the one with the thicker wires) or you will get into trouble when running the disk in DMA mode (which you should do to get maximum speed).

ok great...thanks for the prompt responses - v clear...I only have one of the high speed cables so I've used that on the main disk (where the system will reside) and it's on the primary IDE channel. I suppose I can get another cable whenever..on now for a clean install of gentoo - yikes. :-)

not all 80 wire connectors are DMA100.

look at hdparm -I /dev/hda to see what the capabilities of the drive are an whether it is connecting at it's best rate.

if not a small investment will boost your system nicely.

Interesting...I have the system up and running now, HDA is the hard dsik originally discussed....As I said I have the older style cable on the 2nd IDEA channel (a hdd and CDROM connected to it)...

Is this why dmesg reports UDMA(33) for one HDD? (the one on the secondary IDE channel - i.e. when i get a cable will i likely get UDMA(100) or (133) from this disk)?

Code:
dmesg | grep hd

yep hdd is being held back , presumably by the cable. Should do UDMA(100)

then try a few hdparm -tT /dev/hda tests to see how the speeds line for each drive.

Isn't that CD-drive at the same channel lower that speed (& cable) :?:

I think you can't get that UDMA100 speed when thay're in the same channel (if I'm wrong, please enlighten me)

here goes:

Code:
bash-3.1#hdparm -I /dev/hda /dev/hdb | grep udma
        DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
        DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2

just plugged my DVD onto the same cable as my HD both behave the same as when DVD was /dev/hdd

you had me doubting for a minute because I seem to recall having read that somewhere as well. Dont know if it used be the case and now things are better or if it is a popular myth. These things have a tendancy to propagate sometimes.

I think I may a cable issue , try:

Code:
dmesg | grep IDE

you may see a message about wrong cable.
