I have gotten a logitech quickcam working. Support isn't built into the kernel, but you can google around and find a couple drivers that will produce something that will work. This thing cost less than $20 if you want a good webcam this isn't the one to get.
If you want quality, find a cam that uses a PCI capture card (preferably a brooktree or bttv chipset), assuming you have a free PCI slot. |

I've a Camstick XXL (USB) working here...
This one seems to be idetical to the sticks sold by aiptek and uses the stv680 chip.
Support for the webcam mode is in the latest vanilla sources and downloading photos from the stick is possible using a small tool calles pencam2.
But don't think that quality is to good... it's just a webcam after all |

Try a D-Link DSB-C100. Costs around $20. Picture quality is fair. It uses the well know, well documented ov511 kernel module. Then you can watch your kids in the other room on xawtv.

This is more a warning than a reccomendation. Don't buy a creative PC-CAM of any description. They work pretty well (most of the time) in windows, and the features are quite good as you can wander about with it as a digital camera as well. but linux support is currently not working (Although I'm sure the guys over at spca50x@sourceforge will get it there eventually). The digital camera part apparently works in linux, but I've been having problems with gphoto2 in gentoo anyway.
Hope you find something good.

I have a logitech QuickCam Pro and it works very well at 640x480.
This site http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ explains how to set it up and others also. |

I have the coveted 3com homeconnect camera, after I spent a month tracking it down. but, i have yet to be able to get it working. It worked fine when I ran windows...but, now i can't seem to do anything with it, even though the kernel recognizes it and uses the vicam module for it...but, it just turns on and it doesn't actually take picture of anything. oh well. |

I got a Philips 740K - the real name is something like Quickcam TS Pro Deluxe whatever
Module is in the kernel, its usb and the quality is very good.
Check google for philiops and the pwcx module.
Works nice , had zilch problems setting up last night. |

I Have a PC-CAM 600 and i got it HALF working under linux using gphoto2. Oddly enough i cant seem to view my HI Quality images (Comes up as RAW photos -- if anyone has a fix for this please message me!). I can only see the regular/low images. wierd stuff. Works great under windows though. The camera itself is good for an inexpensive digicam/webcam. but i find under 'not-normal' lighting conditions (inside or really sunny) the colours come out wierd. If you're going to buy an inexpensive digital cam, i would suggenst something very small so you can always have it with you. Like mpio's DC 100. Its a MP3 player and Digicam in one. (I dont know about how this will work under linux, but i own one of their mp3 players and found someone that developed drivers for it. Hope it helps _________________ if at first you dont succeed, Skydiving is not for you.

I have a QuickCam Express. It doesn't work. The compile fails with about 15 pages of errors when building the qce (quick cam express) usb module from the internet. Apparently, it won't work with higher than 2.4.20, and I have 2.6. _________________ Registered Linux User #263260 |
