hi there
4 weeks ago i installed a brandnew gentoo-2006.0 everything was working fine until i "emerge --sync" then portage wanted to emerge kde-3.5.4..
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-437186-highlight-.html
so i tried to figure out what the problem was, i started "revdep-rebuild" and the anger begun.
Code: | emerge libxml2 && emerge libxslt && emerge -uvDN world | the error changed
the error changed again, i saw in the error bessage that the code was looking for a file in GCC3.44 dir, and i had changed the profile to 2006.0 which uses GCC 3.4.6, so i thought i have to recompile my system
that went fine until it started GCC compiling, there it broke with an error like "this error is not reproducable, so it must be a hardware error", after the next restart i had problems with my mounted filesystem, fsck repaired some stuff and even on the next reboot repaired some stuff and again and again.. so i thought this must be a harddisc error, i put in an old win95 disc an used fdisk to destroy my old partitions and created a new one, then i formated the disc but this is what i dont understand : THERE ARE NO BAD BLOCKS so i dont know further ... THX A LOT for any SUGGESTIONS _________________ I do not have a Superman complex, for I am God not Superman

try low level formatting before you create your partitions and such. high level formatting(fdisk, cfdisk, partition magic) just make the drive usable it does not zero the drive. |

Is there anything marginal about the hardware? are you overclocking? is the system stuck in a hot closet? is it built from 2nd hand parts? Boot into your BIOS and check temps/fan speeds/voltages.
I'd recommend getting your hands on a Knoppix CD (or any other good live CD). Check your memory with memtest86. Check your hard disk SMART status with smartctl - look at the error rates & relocated events. Check the platter with badblocks -n. I believe the Knoppix kernel is built with MCE enabled, so watch the log files for Machine Check Exception events being logged. [use mcelog to view them - these are probably cpu/memory/mobo errors].
