Hi guys I'm using xorg 7.1.1 with latest ati drivers and can't get Xgl working again. (yes it worked some months ago =)

The problem: I can start Xgl but whenever I start compiz it says that no Xgl is present. It looks like Xgl is not launched correctly. Does anyone know something about that?

How are you calling xgl and compiz?

By the way Xgl only works as root, thats what I get as user in normal X:
Code:

glxgears
FGLTexMgr: open of shared memory object failed (Permission denied)
__FGLTexMgrCreateObject: __FGLTexMgrSHMmalloc failed!!!
FGLTexMgr: open of shared memory object failed (Permission denied)
__FGLTexMgrCreateObject: __FGLTexMgrSHMmalloc failed!!!

Whats going on?

Ok some news: I fixed the error above with an appropriate line in my fstab. Now compiz recognizes my XGl correctly although it complained first about dbus. Now I get:

Code:

XGL Present
compiz: dbus_bus_get error: Unable to determine the address of the message bus (try 'man dbus-launch' and 'man dbus-daemon' for help)
compiz: Plugin 'dbus':initDisplay failed
compiz: Couldn't activate plugin 'dbus'
compiz: 'csm' plugin must be loaded after 'dbus' plugin
compiz: Can't activate 'csm' plugin due to dependency problems

How do I start compiz correctly?

Phlogiston: You need to launch a dbus session via dbus-launch since you obviously are not using gnome via the /etc/rc.conf XSESSION variable.

Yes I finally saw it in the wiki! Thanks.

But another problem: Xgl uses a lot of CPU (mostly all) when moving windows or rotating cube... Thats not normal I think.

Any hint?

/edit: Is it possible that cpu is rendering all the stuff and not my ati graphics card? Here is my Xorg.log:

Hmm I just found an interesting solution for the slowness: Setting depth to 16, but then my fglrx driver says thats not supported...

I'm in amd64 arquitecture and two months ago i compiled previous versions of compiz and all the stuff with no problems.
¿Any idea?

I get this too, and really don't know how to proceed. I haven't updated in a couple of months either, so I'm hoping I have all of the new deps (so far I think xgl, mesa and cairo have been updated).

I too get this. But did get compiz-quinnstorm.0.0.13.11 to compile and am using
compiz-quinnstorm.0.0.13.20 so it did compile no longer an ebuild though.
compiz in portage also fails at same spot.

also no help
are you either of you, failing at texture.c ?

Been trying to find some dependency ... to no avail. If you need a 64 bit binary of 13.11 or 13.20 quinnstorm let me know, other than that
I don't really know what to do.

Xgl/Compiz runs quite nice here now, but I got that nasty switcher bug again: The window of the switcher stays there when I release alt-tab... It's quite annoying. Anyone knows what to do?

hello guys .
Well, I come back from holidays , and there is lots of news !
I need some info : I see that there is "compiz" in portage now... ok that's great ! But sould we use the compiz from portage, or "compiz-quinnstorm" from the xgl-overlay ?
By the way, why in the xgl overlay, compiz-quinnstorm is not changed by beryl ?
finaly a stupid question (again ;) ) : how can I remove completely XGL, as it become useless (for me), because I prefer to use Xorg7.1 with aixgl .
Thank you .

Ok folks today i got MS Window flashbacks

I installed Seamonkey today with no problems
XGl/Compiz worked just fine.
I then installed netscape-flash and now Compiz
will not start. I have removed netscape-flash and
still Compiz will no longer start.
What the F@#$ is the deal with flash and compiz.
I thought these problems with flash were fixed
in compiz months ago.

Has anyone had this problem or have any idea
how to fix it. I have removed flash but compiz
won't start. Am running the LAST version of
xgl/compiz.

It doesn't sound connected to me at all. Even if the events correspond I'm not convinced that flash had anything to do with your problem in compiz. I'm using flash and have no problems with compiz. Can you run an strace of compiz? Is compiz segfaulting or what exactly is it stopping on?

yea i have already done that

yea i been using flash with no problem since the last time a compiz version caused this
this happend before with some previous versions of compiz so yea it is related
nothing else was changed on the system prior to this

compiz.log file shows nothing
cgwd.log shows
** (cgwd:8842): WARNING **: Cannot open pixmap: above

** (cgwd:8842): WARNING **: Cannot open pixmap: unabove

** (cgwd:8842): WARNING **: Cannot open pixmap: sticky

** (cgwd:8842): WARNING **: Cannot open pixmap: unsticky

the only thing that is differant is that i installed netscape-flash when i
decided to start using seamonkey

i installed netscape-flash because unlike firefox, seamonkey didn't
prompt me to install flash when i went to a site that uses flash

when this happend before with previous versions of compiz i could rename
my firefox "with flash installed" folder and restart firefox with no flash and
had no problem

EDIT: here is the strace of compiz

Jupiter1TX: Please do NOT post such big logs, better use pastebin for that. It's quite annoying to scroll through the whole output.

Thanks in advance

Jupiter1TX:
I had this messages too some time ago. My problem was kde related. If you use kde try something else like gnome or xfce. If you only have kde you can test it with another user or move .kde to something like .kdeback...
If you don't even use kde forget my post

actually i also have gnome on here, same problem
i also have multiple accounts on here for testing, same problem
thanks though

just so i am clear
everything was perferctly fine here
then i installed netscape-flash-7.0.63 as i was trying out
seamonkey-1.0.3. I shutdown the computer as i had to go
do some work. I came back and BAM, compiz won't start.

i have since removed netscape-flash and re-installed
xgl/compiz and all it's dependancies "all same versions
that were already installed", i have created new user test
account, tried both kde and gnome,,, same problem

i do believe it is flash related
going back to february there have been several versions of
compiz that crashed when flash was installed.
this is however the first time i tried seamonkey with netscape-flash
rather than firefox going to a flash enabled site and getting the
dialog box that say's i need flash and the option to install it.
seamonkey didn't do that so i used netscape-flash

to be honest i am still learning to be a linux user, so as far as
troubleshooting, uh yea right, one day
i only new how to do strace because i read someone using it for
troubleshooting in a thread some time back

EDIT: it's not easy being a Windows guy with a Linux box
i would like to switch over to AIGLX/Beryl, but it is being treated
in the same manner as David R. did in November 2005 with compiz

Incase the KDE users haven't stumbled across this yet, here is a working Kicker for XGL/Compiz/Beryl! (For those that don't know what the Kicker is, it's the thing in the taskbar where you change desktops by clicking on it, etc.)

Does anyone have comiz-manager working with xfce4? When I try to start compiz-quinnstorm with compiz-manager, there are some errors about not finding the window manager, and then starting a default window manager, which seems to be the xfce4 native window manager itself (which I have, of course, removed from the xfce4 start-up files.) Compiz itself does not acutally start, and there are no xgl-effects. When I start compiz-quinnstorm in a more traditional way (with csm and cgwd) it works perfectly. This is on the current revision 455.

Here's the script /usr/bin/compizrc:

Code:
dbus-launch cgwd --replace &

dbus-launch --auto-syntax --exit-with-session compiz --replace dbus csm &

#dbus-launch --auto-syntax --exit-with-session compiz-manager &

In other words commenting out the first 2 lines and uncommenting the 3rd would cause this problem.

Thanks!

I updated from compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.57 to 0.0.13.57-r1 yesterday, and since then when compiz starts, the screen goes completely white. Because of this, I have yet to get any output so I can't further identify the problem. And just to make it harder, it seems 13.57 has been removed from the overlay. However I did downgrade to 13.56 and it does the same. I recently updated xgl as well, which I will try to downgrade. Does anyone have any insight into the problem?

If I switch to terminal 1 and type "killall compiz", I can switch back and there is no problem with my display. So this must be an issue with compiz at least.

Here is the output from the terminal (same for dbus-launch compiz)

Quote:

The strace looks similar to a problem I had, but I don't believe it was related to flash at all. It was corrected by a later compiz revision and had to do with my 64 bit install. (I found this out by reading the compile log, there were 2 warnings that were the cause of the segfault)

Are you running amd64 or are you running x86?

If you are running amd64, then is it possible for you to do a gdb and bt (backtrace) this? You'd have need to have compiled with features=nostrip.

Also, which version of compiz-quinnstorm are you running? I had problems with this specifically with the cvs, and with 13.51-52 if I remember correctly.
