How do I setup fstab correctly for DVD/RW? (SOLVED)

I'm having trouble setting up my DVD/RW drive and don't know if I've set up fstab correctly.
The manual 2006.0 says, quote

/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user 0 0

but /dev/cdroms doesn't exist.
udev is running,

fred@athlon64 ~ $ ps -ef | grep udev
root 1213 1 0 Aug19 ? 00:00:01 /sbin/udevd --daemon

so what is going on?
I could do

/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user 0 0

instead but that isn't what the manual says.
Can anyone tell me which is the correct method as I'm going around in circles!
I'm running ~x86_64 and my major problem is getting k3b to work.
