When running the "after vacation" update of my laptop, it seems that I installed newer boot scripts which do bad things about the network.

First surprise: now, the laptop does dhcpcd during boot, which is NOT smart, since I sometimes will run on ADSL and sometimes will connect to a LAN with dhcp. It never did this.

Second surprise: impossible do get an adsl connection, even after doing ifconfig eth0 down.

I suspect some fancy boot scripts which believe that any computer will want to do dhcp at boot have been installed, but after some time, I did not find what to fix. What should I do ?

PS: I currently cannot bring network on my laptop, so I write this message with a desktop and cannot post any file at this point.

It's probably the baselayout upgrade from 1.11.14/15 to 1.12.4-rX.

If you don't have /etc/init.d/net.eth0 symlinked to /etc/init.d/net.lo things can happen. All net.{ath,eth,wlan}0 should be symlinked to net.lo (as far as I have understood).

The configuration file is /etc/conf.d/net but the contents of /etc/conf.d/wireless are also taken into consideration for backwards compatibility.

The instructions in Wireless Networking should help in checking your configuration.

Thanks! In fact, I had just found the /etc/conf.d/net file and used it to work around this issue (added some xxx=null lines in it and am done). Thanks!

Maybe you should look into some interface management tools such as netplug and wpa_supplicant.
