Hello I am very new to linux just got down with my first book and I am trying to install Gentoo I heard good things from my friends about Gentoo and I wanted to check it out myself. But when I try to boot it says
Code: | >> Activating mdev
>> Determining root device...
!! Block device /dev/sda3 is not a valid root device...
!! the root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot () :: _ |
Now like I said I am very VERY new to Linux so can you please show me step-by-step how to fix this problem |

seems like you either forgot some drivers (then again, you seem to have used genkernel...) or specified the wrong root= device in your bootloader. wynn is creating a checklist for this type of problem in this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-491661.html
basically, you need to specify the proper root= device, for example at that very prompt. could be /dev/sdb3 or /dev/hda3 or something else entirely, depending on your setup... _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland
