Keeping the -name/-title setting for terminals

Ok, I know that this is simple, but I still seem to miss it.

When I define a name/title for a terminal, it is quickly overridden, and I kind of would like to use the title/name I chose, except for when I'm running emerge or something else in which the titlebar is used for a progress bar.

How could a fella go around fixing this kind of thing up?
