Hi,
I am using gentoo for quite a while on servers and now I want to replace my windows xp.
But I am bit scared because I never did a desktop pc and my desktop should be ready in 3 days (I have a dual 3Ghz server to help compiling )
Anyone has a good guide to get a desktop running?
Thanks in advance. |

In 3 days? I couldn't myself, but some people could... I think the biggest issue is not to get the "desktop" running, but rather gentoo. I (and that's just me) would keep your XP there for when you really need the desktop, and work on installing Gentoo at night or in parallel. When your Gentoo is running, then remove the Windows partition. If you use LVM, then this is quite easy because you can just remove the winXP partition and add it to another one of your Gentoo installation.
This is of course provided that you have enough HD to keep XP in the first place...
If all you need is internet during the first weeks, the Gentoo liveCD allows you to browse the net while you install... that's how I survived during my installation time.
Sorry if I haven't answered your question... I don't know of such a guide... |

The Gentoo Guide combined with stuff from the gentoo wiki. I can have a perfect working system up with GUI and the tools i need to program and debug in a day + a night of good sleep while compiling. _________________ Laptop: Zepto 2314W, Pentium M 730, 512 Mb Pc-3200

whenever i have to install gentoo and i need my computer asap, i tend to put some other distro onto my box first (one of those just-work-right-out-of-the-box distros, kubuntu comes to mind), then i start that and start installing from there. that way i have a complete, working desktop and i can install gentoo at the same time. _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland
