I have a hard drive that I thinks is horked. Is there a somewhat standard set of tools to use to verify this? So far I've come up with e2fsck/badblocks along with smartmontools. If running these two will give me a decent idea of what's wrong, then I should be good. Any others out there that will help? |

For verifying a hardware failure, smartmontools / badblocks (in non destructive mode) is all you should need. For data rescue, there is dd (or the dd_rescue variant), testdisk, fsck, ...
General rule: If you haven't got a backup, the data wasn't important. |

Cool, I thought that was the case but I wasn't sure, thanks for the confirmation. I had alread suspected this drive was sketchy, so I didn't have anything important on it, I had just mounted my /usr/portage/distfiles there. And since this box has been turned off for a few months, most of those packages would be out of date anyway. |
