|
|
I have a pristine HTPC system that is nearing completion. The awesome looking Silverstone case looks good but lacks an IR receiver on the front. I looked around and found that most IR receivers are huge and don't feel that my meagre soldering skills would produce anything that didn't look ghetto.
So, I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any non IR based remote hardware that is supported by Gentoo. I've looked around for Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz remotes and found that maybe 1 in 20 remotes is not IR, and all of those I found came with only windows support.
Any ideas? |

I ended up building my own device, but you should check this tiny receiver out. The people at mythtv seem to be all about it. I must admit that it is a compact device! |

That link actually points to an emitter, but there's a receiver on the same page: http://www.irblaster.info/receiver.html |

Thanks guys. After looking at this product and showing it around I got the WAF I was looking for. I also found a bunch of unused buttons on my plasma remote that I can double for IR so I'm happy. Looks like I'll buy one. |

Ah, the critical step. Just out of curiousity, what did you get? |

The IR blaster link above has a receiver. It's a straight serial unit produced by some guy. It came with slightly insufficient packaging for an international shipment but was in good condition. The device's receiver is a lot smaller than I expected, possibly 5mm cubic tops.
I have used some unused button on the TV remote used to control teletext and setup menu's to control the HTPC, so I have only a single remote in the room, without having to buy a replacement. Range is perfect even at around 9m, which is about as far as I can test it.
It's so sensitive in fact that it appears to be picking up IR codes from the screen of the plasma! Not sure about how that works. Luckily the HTPC is in a cabinet and the IR receiver is not in LOS to the plasma.
I'm happy. |
