I just got a whole bunch of new hardware for my computer and am having what seems to be a strange scheduling problem. Sometimes the keys will repeat so fast that I cant do anything, no delay and about 2000 keys per second! Switching tabs in firefox is also very slow (2-3 sec) and there seems to be a delay (2-10 sec) in the mouse scroll wheel, but not if I just click and drag the scroll-bar. The key repeat problem is only in kde. not in the console, and is intermittent, maybe 80% od the time. MP3s play at the correct speed and starting programs is lightning fast. I have SMP support in the kernel, but could not find the "enhanced real mode timer" or whatever it's called that the kernel help says I should enable. My system specs follow...

Code:

Biostar TForce4 U motherboard (nForce4 chipset).
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ processor
regular ATA disks
PNY GeForce 6600 PCI-X16 graphics card

No strange messeges appear in /var/log/messages.

dmesg seems to be OK.

Also my curser doesn't seem to blink.

This gentoo install has been running great on older amd/mach speed hardware for years, it's definitely something to do with my new hardware. Did I just choose bad hardware? If any of my configs or logs would be of any use, I'll post them. I just don't want to clutter things unnessessarily

Thanks, Lawrence

Here's a little update...

I turned off auto repeat in the kde control center and I can now type something legible! Although it is a pain to have to hit the arrow keys over and over again to get somewhere.

The scroll wheel is related only to the version of firefox that I intalled through portege. Firefox 2.0 beta 1 precompiled from mozilla works fine, as well as all other KDE apps. I'll try recompiling FF 1.5 to see what happens.

Anyone else had this kind of problem or know how to fix it?

The key repeat problem seems to be fixed! I found " Enhanced Real Time Clock Support" the in Device Drivers->Character->Enhanced Real Time Clock Support. Keyboard repeat rates are normal now but I'm still noticing tab switching delays in FF. Also my screensaver comes on in about 10 seconds instead of 10 minuts. Does anyone with a dual core processor have any experiance with this?

I installed the latest NVidia driver and it seems to have fixed the FF tab switching delay, but the scrolling problem still exists. I'll try Xorg 7.1 when I get a chance. I'm running 6.8.2-r6.

I think it's all fixed :D :D :D

I went to install xorg and it needs gcc 4.1, which needs a new glibc, which needs nptl, which needs CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" set in make .conf, mine was i386. Well, you know what they say about changing CHOST! I did it, bootstrapped, installed gcc 4.1, rebuilt system and world, installed xorg 7.1 and now it all seems to work. I hope this helps others with the same problem. If anyone has any questions, just post here and I'll try to answer. If you need me to answer quickly, post here or start a new topic and email me at detroit371 at gmail dot com. It's kind of disapoining to upgrade hardware and have the performance go down the drain!
