hello fellows,

I'm looking for experience with the current 2.5.x kernel versions on different processors.

I'm facing this situation:

for about 2 weeks I have my Desktop running on current 2.5.x-mm - works like nothing before :)) This is a custom-build (grown over the years) AMD 1500XP, GF4Ti. XFree-4.3.0-r2 with nvidia-1.0.4349-r1

Now I tried upgrading a Notebook: Dell I81k, 1GHz PIIIm, GF2Go
The system boots ok. X only works with the old .3123 kernel module which i have to insmod :( with the newer nvidia the screen gooes black and hangs. Ok, X runs ... but what about the mouse? Touchpad works, Trackball does not (no issue here with kernel 2.4.x) I looked around, tried different input modules in the 2.5.x kernel but the trackball (the mini-joystick on the keyboard) does not work :((
One other issue in X: gnome-terminal comes up but does nothing: no reaction to input and no output at all. even Xterm does not run ...
Code:
xterm: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys

I'm very happy about the good performance and no-issues-at-all on the AMD system but what about the Intel notebook? Any ideas?

thanks
Jens

About that I think you are experiencing a known problem issued here.

yes, the pts isue is solved
A RTFM (release Anouncement from Linus on the LKML) did help a lot ;)

but the rest?

Most pressing issue is the non working trackpoint :((
